Tonight a friend confided in me and after a lengthy discussion they ended with the fact that their spouse told them...sometimes, marriage is simply a commitment...
And to their surprise I said...
Those are some pretty romantic words.
Think about it...we all know that marriage isn't always great friendship, hot sex and fun fun fun. Sometimes it is just plain hard work, no feeling, and a commitment. But that is truly romantic...that a spouse would stay in it, to honor their commitment. To honor words they said, and reap no reward. To honor a union that they entered into with hope, even though hope is gone.
What makes that spouse stay even though they are running on fumes? I have to believe it is the strength of commitment. The hope that commitment brings, the belief that something will change for the better just because we did what we said we were going to do.
